Biography: Mary Ann Haly was born on 4 October 1814 at Harefield Grove near Uxbridge, the daughter of Major Aylmer Haly and his wife Amelia Bannister. In 1838, she married her first cousin George Thomas Haly and the couple had several children. Her husband served as an officer in the Madras Native Infantry and the family spent several years in India. Both husband and wife wrote books: George several works about India and soldiering; and Mary two novels Blanche of Montacute (published 1865) and another serialized in the Churchman's Family Magazine. On her husband's retirement in 1870, they returned to England where he died the following year. She died on 24 March 1890 in Fulham.
