Author: Harley Rodney (1858–1930)

Biography: Harley Rodney was born in 1858 in London, the son of William Powell Rodney and his wife Diana Hotham (née Lubbock). He came from wealth, his father being connected to the family of the Baron Rodney. His father died in 1868 and he and his mother went to live with his maternal grandmother in Hastings. Rodney attended Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. After university, he entered the civil service where he worked as secretary to the Public Records Office. He also turned his hand to fiction, producing several novels. He retired to Hastings where he did much to promote chess. He never married and died on 5 September 1930 in Hastings.
