Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center
The University of Texas at Austin
This list is a description of the Ransom Center's holdings of
manuscript material by and relating to women writers represented in the
Robert Lee Wolff Collection of Victorian Fiction. The Harry Ransom
Humanities Research Center purchased the Wolff Collection in July, 1984.
It is considered one of the most comprehensive collections of Victorian
fiction in existence. Robert Lee Wolff spent over thirty years collecting
books published between 1837 and 1901, and he estimated that he had
obtained almost a quarter of the 42,000 titles published in England during
the reign of Queen Victoria. Wolffs goal was to include representations
of all forms of literature from the period, not just the most important
works, so the Wolff Collection includes a good deal of unique material by
"minor" writers.
One area where the Wolff Collection excels is its collection of
women writers. The nineteenth century produced a proliferation of women
writers, as well as women readers. Books written by women were popular in
the Victorian era because they were thought to emphasize morality and
emotion, which were considered two natural attributes of women. The
majority of women writers reflected the ideals of the day, although
twentieth-century readers may be more familiar with those who challenged
Victorian thinking, such as George Eliot and Christina Rossetti. The Wolff
Collection includes these writers, as well as minor authors familiar only
to students of the century. Whether major or minor, however, the
contribution that women writers made to the literature of the nineteenth
century was significant.
This list describes manuscripts in already-cataloged and
uncataloged collections as well as the manuscript material that was added
by the purchase of the Wolff Collection. Material can be found by looking
under the last name of the writer in question. A collection name
designation to the left of each entry denotes the location of the material
within the Ransom Center, and a description of the work is included on the
right side of the page. This description will vary depending on whether
the material has been cataloged or not, or if the collection as a whole is
too large to be described item by item. In this case, a collection level
description will be included, although it is possible to request more
information about each collection. The collection includes eighteenth,
nineteenth and twentieth-century manuscript material.
For additional information, contact the Office of the Research
Librarian, Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of
Texas at Austin, P.O. Drawer 7219, Austin, Texas, 78713-7219; (512)-471-

MANUSCRIPT USE POLICY
Policies governing access, photoduplication, and publication of
manuscripts are established by the Director with the advice of the Ransom
Center's Public Use Committee. In order to provide a balance between the
needs of scholars and the rights of both the copyright holder (the author
of the manuscript, author's heir, or literary executor) and of the Harry
Ransom Humanities Research Center as owner of the physical property, the
Center carefully regulates the use of manuscripts in its collections. The
term "manuscript" is taken here to mean any handwritten, typewritten, or
proof material, whether the text has been published or not, as well as
non- commercially produced magnetic media.
The literary rights to manuscripts in the Ransom Center are
retained by the copyright holder unless those rights have been legally
conveyed to the Ransom Center or are in the public domain. The rights as
owners of the physical property belong to The University of Texas at
Austin on behalf of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center.
ACCESS. Any reader wishing to make use of manuscripts is required to
complete a "Manuscript Reader's Application" giving full information about
the subject, scope, and purpose of the research being undertaken.
Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis, and access to Ransom
Center collections is subject to whatever restrictions have been placed on
materials by donors or depositors or by the Ransom Center for
preservation, processing, or other essential purposes.
PHOTODUPLICATION. All photoduplication requests must comply with Ransom
Center rules and procedures. Before paper copies, microfilm, or copy
photographs can be made, the reader must supply the Center with a
completed "Authorization Form for Photoduplication of Original Materials,"
signed by the copyright holder. It is the reader's responsibility to
obtain this authorization. A reader may ask that this requirement be
waived in cases where the author cannot be located and no heirs or
literary executor can be traced if evidence of a thorough search is
provided.
Although a fee is charged for the preparation of copies in any
form, such copies remain the property of the Ransom Center and must be
returned upon completion of research. Further, such copies are not to be
reproduced, retained indefinitely, or made available to any other person
or institution without written permission of the Center.
PUBLICATION. Readers who wish to quote from or publish the Ransom
Center's manuscript materials must obtain the permission of the copyright
holder and must complete and submit to the Ransom Center a "Notification of
Intent to Quote from or Publish Manuscripts" form. THE READER WILL
DEFEND, INDEMNIFY, AND HOLD HARMLESS THE RANSOM
CENTER AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM, ITS BOARD OF
REGENTS, THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, ITS OFFICERS,
EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS AGAINST ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS,
COSTS, AND EXPENSES INCLUDING ATTORNEYS' FEES INCURRED
BY COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT OR ANY OTHER LEGAL OR
REGULATORY COURSE OF ACTION ARISING FROM THE USE OF
RANSOM CENTER MANUSCRIPTS.
The Ransom Center reserves the right to assess a use fee for the
commercial publication of manuscript material from its collections. The
Ransom Center also reserves the right to assess a use fee if a scholarly
publication consists extensively or exclusively of manuscripts from Ransom
Center collections.
The Ransom Center requires that a complete copy of any publication
(in any medium) based on its materials be given to the Center for its
collections.
In stating the location of materials in Ransom Center collections
and acknowledging their use, the following basic citation should be used:
