Biography: Mary Anne Armstrong was born in 1831 in Salford, the daughter of brewer Reuben Wroe and his wife Mary (née Birch). In 1856, she married cotton cloth manufacturer David Brown Armstrong. The couple would have two children. Under the pseudonym "Elleray Lake," Armstrong wrote the novel Longleat (1870). A nearly life-long resident of Salford, she took a great interest in her community and served as a member of the Salford School Board. She died on 13 July 1895 in Sheffield.
