Author: Frances Maitland (1842–1929)

Biography: Frances Maitland was born on 29 January 1842 in Kells, Scotland, the daughter of James Maitland and his wife Louisa (née Bellamy). One source describers her childhood as "one of a large family... brought up in a Scotch manse" where the "happiest hours of [her] existence were spent with the grandmother whose great-grandfather had laid down his life on Tower-Hill for the 'Old Pretender'." She was educated at home with English governesses. After the death of her father, she lived in London, France, and Switzerland. As an adult, she converted to Roman Catholicism. As a writer she contributed to numerous Catholic magazines as well as writing a few books. She never married and died on 27 Apirl 1929 in Wimbleton.
