Author: Mary Ann Meehan (1836–1884)

Biography: Mary Ann Meehan was born around 1836 in Newcastle, Ireland, the daughter of Captain Francis Meehan of the P.O.S.N. Company and his wife Margaret (née Carr). A year or so later, the family moved to England, first to Poplar where her sister Rose Ellen was born in 1839 then later to Southampton where their father's shipping company was headquartered. The sisters were educated in England and resided for a time in France. When their father died suddenly in April 1856, the family moved to Dublin where their mother opened a school. Both Mary Ann and Rose Ellen worked in the school. While in Ireland, the sisters co-wrote a novel, The Haunted Castle (1862). Though it received fair reviews, the sister did not continue with literature. At some time, the sister moved back to Southampton where Rose Ellen died on 7 August 1880. Mary Ann died of cancer on 18 August 1884 in Brompton.
