Biography: Mary Latta was born on 30 October 1803 in Edinburgh, the daughter of builder John Millar and his wife Joanna (née Hepburn). In 1825, she married physician Thomas Aitchison Latta and the couple had four sons. Her husband is best known for his pioneering development of the saline drip during a cholera outbreak. The marriage was relatively short lived due to his death in 1833. During her widowhood, she turned her hand to fiction writing several stories and one novel The Orphans of Glenulva (1862). She died on 21 July 1873 in Edinburgh.
