Biography: Douglas Stewart was born on 11 July 1835 in London, the son of Duncan Stewart, the author of an Arabic grammar. His three sisters were the novelists Elizabeth M. Stewart, Agnes M. Stewart, and Mary Hibbert-Ware. From a young age, he turned to literature, writing for the stage (including a time as an actor and theatre manager), working as a journalist, and writing fiction. He struggled financially, appying unsuccessfully to the Royal Literary Fund. Unfortunately, he turned to fraud for which he was tried, convicted, and served time in 1880. In 1870, he married Annette Sarah Grant and the couple had several children. He died in October 1911 in Lambeth.
