Author: George Somers Bellamy (1842–1888)
Biography: George Somers Bellamy was born on 20 April 1842 in Plymouth, the son of surgeon John Cremer Bellamy and his wife Theodora (née de Castro). His early life cannot be traced, but he entered journalism and later turned his hand to writing plays and fiction. In 1867, he married Caroline Elizabeth Bampton. She died in 1872 shortly after he emigrated to New York. He subsequently returned to England where he married Elizabeth Mercy Morley in 1874. The couple later separated. Claiming this second marriage was null, he married Fanny Hargravia Muir in 1879 while also suffering a bankruptcy the same year. Inexplicably, he married his wife's sister Alice Robina Muir claiming his third wife was dead (she was not). In late 1887, he was arrested for double bigamy since his second wife had returned seeking money. While out on bail, he fled to New York where he died on 9 May 1888. A thoroughly odd series of events.
