Biography: Linda Gardiner was born on 2 June 1861 in Gorleston, Suffolk, the daughter of newspaper editor William S. Gardiner. Educated at home, she later followed her father into a literary career. She also wrote several novels. In the twentieth century, she took an interest in birds: she served as the secretary of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (1900–1935) and edited Bird Notes and News. She never married and died on 1 March 1941 in London.
