Alternate Name(s): Claude Campbell Guise Mitford (legal name)

Biography: Claude Campbell Guise Mitford was born on 25 August 1869 in London, the son of William and Emily Mitford. His early life cannot be traced. By the late 1890s, he worked as a secretary of a clerical fund and had begun writing with the novel The Spell of the Snow (1900). Relatively late in life, he married Sarah E. Armstrong in 1928, though his three children were all born before this date. Mitford must have struggled financially since he was accused of writing begging letters in 1930. He died on 24 October 1939 in Tonbridge.
