Author: William George Craven (1835–1906)
Biography: William George Craven was born on 6 May 1835 in London, the son of George Augustus Craven and his wife Charlotte (née Smythe). He was the grandson of the 1st Earl of Craven. He attended Eton and later devoted himself to horse racing. Notably, he was a member of the Jockey Club and help codify the rules for steeplechase. In 1857, he married Mary Catherine Yorke and the couple had five children. The marriage later broke down due to mutual accusations of adultery leading to divorce and separation proceedings. Craven wrote several works, including the single novel. He died on 2 January 1906 in London of pneumonia.
