Biography: Charles William Wood was born in 1842 in Boulogan, France, the son of businessman Henry Wood and his wife the novelist Ellen Wood (née Price). From an early age, he assisted his mother in editing her magazine Argosy eventually taking it over. He also branched out into publishing himself on a small scale. Following his mother, he wrote a single novel Buried Alone (1869) but later concentrated on travel books on Norway (1880, 1903), Germany (1882), and Spain (1900). After his mother's death, he wrote a memoir of her life. In 1870, he married Anna Mills and the couple had six children. He died of heart failure on 6 January 1919 in Eastbourne.
