Biography: Agnes Marion Haggard was born on 7 May 1860 in Rastrick, the eldest daughter of solicitor Fairless Barber and his wife Maria Louisa (née Musgreave). Her younger sister was the novelist Margaret Fairless Barber (1869–1901). Her childhood friend married H. Rider Haggard and Agnes subsequently became his secretary. In 1886, she married Haggard's brother John George Haggard, a Royal Navy officer and member of the consular service. The couple would have four children and spend time in Brest, Trieste, and Malaga. She wrote several novels under the pseudonym "John Berwick" beginning with The Secret of Saint Florel (1897). Her husband died in 1908 and spent the remainder of her life a widow, dying on 31 May 1960 in a nursing home in Torquay a few weeks after her one hundredth birthday.
