Biography: Sir Douglas Straight was born on 22 October 1844 in London. He attended Harrow and would go on to write a memoir of his time there. Up to 1865 he engaged in journalism, but was then called to the bar and soon worked up an extensive practice, especially at the Central Criminal Court, London. He sat in the House of Commons as Conservative member for Shrewsbury from 1870 to 1874, and from 1879 to 1892 he was a judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. He was knighted on retirement, and four years later he returned to journalism as editor of the Pall Mall Magazine (1893–1896) and the Pall Mall Gazette (from 1896). In addition, he wrote fiction and plays. He died on 4 June 1914 in London.
