Author: Alfred Harold Engelbach (1816–1897)
Biography: Alfred Harold Engelbach was born in 1816 in Westminster. His early life cannot be traced, but his family had some connection to Germany. He worked for the British government as an accountant eventually rising to be the chief accountant to the Colonial and Emmigration Commissioners (later the Colonial Office). At the same time, he was an active contributor of juvenile and historical fiction to the S. P. C. K. In 1845, he married Charlotte Sophia Hunter in Prussia and they had two children. After her death in 1869, he married Janet Dundas Whiffin in 1872 and they had a son. He died on 7 February 1897 in Streatham.
