Author: Charlotte Elizabeth Abbott (1856–1927)

Biography: Charlotte Elizabeth Abbott was born in 1856 in Islington, the eldest daughter of insurance broker John J. Abbott and his wife Elizabeth (née Holiday). As a child, she split time between her father's native Devon and his place of business in London. She never married and turned to fiction in the 1890s becoming a prolific contributor to the Family Herald. It also seems she continued her father's insurance brokerage after his death. Abbott's final days were tragic: she began imagining receiving messages through the wireless along with delusions of being murdered. She died on 31 December 1927 in London after throwing herself in front of an underground train. The coroner ruled her death a suicide.
