Biography: Arthur Eric Cochrane Bayly was born in late 1879 in Bermondsey, the son of lighterman Alfred Bayly and his wife Esther (née Cochrane). His early life cannot be traced. In his teenage years, under the name "A. Eric Bayly," he began contributing to various periodicals and in the space of two years wrote three detective novels including The Secret of Scotland Yard (1900). Unfortunately, his promising literary career was cut short by his death on 27 March 1900 in London after undergoing an operation for appendicitis.
