Biography: Joseph Scott was born on 9 July 1846 in Robertson, Lanarkshire, the eldest son of minister Robert Dixon Scott. His grandfather John Crawford owned a trans-Atlantic shipping company. Attended the University of Glasgow (M.A. 1872) before matriculating to Oxford University where he passed all his examinations but left without his degree. He moved to London where he became a journalist. Under the name "J. Crawford Scott," he published two novels. In 1891, he married Elizabeth Lainson and the couple had three children. Later in life, Scott worked as teacher of classics at the Service College. He died on 9 November 1924 in Hampstead.
