Author: Alfred Butler (1809–1859)

Biography: Alfred Butler was born around 1809, the son of shopkeeper Samuel Butler. Judging by later documents, Butler worked as a druggist in Leicestershire then Lincolnshire. In 1839, Alfred Butler of Loughborough married Hannah Peach, the eldest daughter of Benoni Peach of Gloucester. He found time to write three triple-deckers which received good reviews. By the late 1840s, he lived in Mayfield Cottage near Ashbourne, the former home of poet Thomas Moore. He died on 18 January 1859 near Spalding.
