Biography: Eleanor Jane Pamela Holmes was born on 1 March 1853 in Co. Westmeath, Ireland, the daugher of landower Robert Holmes and his wife Jane Henn. Her father was noted as a breeder of shorthorn cattle and her brothers attained positions in government and letters. In her thirties, Holmes began writing fiction including several three-volume novels. By the turn of the century Holmes and her widowed mother moved to England. Relatively late in life, Holmes married lawyer George E. A. Ross, KC in 1921. She spent her last years in a rest home in Seaton, Devon where she was killed by enemy action on 26 October 1942 after a German bomber jettisoned its payload on its return journey.
