Biography: Francis Simonds was born on 13 July 1824 in Winchester, the son of William and Ellen Simonds. As a boy, he attended the Merchant Taylors' School before studying law. Called to the bar, he worked first in Somerset then Plymouth and Stoke upon Trent. In 1854, he married Mary Ann Jane Hargrave and the couple had two children. Simonds wrote a memoir of his life Reminiscences of a Lawyer under the pseudonym "Francis Sinclair." He subsequently wrote a novel Perils (1877). The same year, he died on 28 November 1877 in Jersey where the family had moved to in 1872.
