Biography: Alice Emily Athol Mair was born in 1838 in Sussex, the daughter of clergyman Henry Winckward Simpson and his wife Elizabeth. In 1863, she married Frederick Mair of Woodgate, Bexhill, Sussex. A dozen years later, she wrote a single novel, Helen Blantyre (1875). She died in 1907 in Sussex.
