Biography: Mary Theodora Baldwin was born on 8 May 1862 in Lucknow, India, the daughter of clergyman John Richard Baldwin and his wife Catherine (née Rose). She was educated in Germany before settling in England. She used her experiences as a basis for her first novel A Popular Girl (1901) and she would go on to write scores more into the 1930s. She never married. For a period in the 1920s she lived in Kenya with her brother. Her later years were spent in Bournemouth where she died on 3 January 1950.
