Author: Mamie Bowles (1868–1916)

Alternate Name(s): (pseudonym); Amy Elanor Bowles (maiden name); Ryley (married name)

Biography: Amy Eleanor Bowles was born in 1868 in London, the daughter of merchant George Bowles and his wife Emily (née Cook). Under the pseudonym "Mamie Bowles" she wrote several novels beginning with The Amazing Lady (1899). By this time, she had begun living with educator Arthur Beresford Ryley who was already married. After his divorce, they married in 1899. It does not appear that the couple had any children. They eventually moved to Kent where her husband taught. She died after a lingering illness on 25 May 1916 in Tonbridge. Interestingly, the author Edward Verrall Lucas was the executor of her will.
