Biography: Fred Merrick White was born in 1859 in West Bromwich, the son of solicitor Jospeh White and his wife Helen (née Merrick). Initially, White followed his father into law, but by the mid 1880s he was contributing serials and stories to several periodicals. He was successful enough that he could turn to writing full time. In 1892, he married Clara Jane Smith and the couple would have four children. White was a prolific novelist, producing detective, spy, and science fiction. He died in December 1935 in Barnstaple.
