Biography: Clara Vernon Simpson Baikie was born in 1842 in Edgbaston, the daughter of James Shaw. In 1858, she married Frederick Cyril Simpson Baikie an officer in the 4th Light Dragoons. The couple had several children including Brig. Gen. Sir Hugh Archie Dundas Simpson-Baikie (1871–1924). Relatively late in life, she wrote a novel Treherne's Temptation (1882) published under the pseudonym "Alaric Carr." Her husband died in 1890 and she died in 1915 in London. Note: her authorship is recorded in the Smith, Elder accounts.
