Biography: Mary Hannah Ward was born around 1833 in Lincoln, the daughter of builder William East. In 1853, she married clergyman Francis Marshall Ward, the vicar of Hereford Cathedral. The couple later moved to Nottingham and had several children. Beginning in the late 1860s, Ward wrote juvenile fiction. After a long and painful illness, she died on 4 December 1883 in Nottingham.
