Author: Annie Maria Piercy (1848–1936)

Alternate Name(s): Taylor (maiden name)

Biography: Annie Maria Piercy was born around 1848 in Birmingham, the daughter of Joseph Taylor, one-time town councillor of Birmingham. Her early life cannot be traced. In 1879, she married Wesleyan minister and missionary to China George Piercy after the death of his first wife in 1878. The couple moved to Canton and had three children (the oldest two born in China). Poor health forced the family to return to England in 1882 where they continued working among the Chinese in East London. On their return, Piercy turned her hand to fiction, writing two novels based on her experences in the east. She later gave lectures and recitals. Her husband died in 1913 and she died on 7 December 1936 in Birmingham.
