Author: Helen Atteridge (1856–1931)
Biography: Helen Atteridge was born in 1856 at sea in the south Pacific, the daughter of ship captain and owner John Atteridge and Ellen Maria Hilliard (both Irish). Her early life cannot be traced. In the 1880s, she began writing fiction for young adult readers as well as contributing to periodicals. By 1891, she lived with her elder brother Andrew Hilliard Atteridge in London and worked as a teacher of music. Both brother and sister were Roman Catholic, with Andrew editing the Catholic Times. She never married and died on 23 February 1931 in London.
