Biography: Ellen Louisa Brown was born in 1844 in Little Yeldham, Essex, the daughter of farmer James Brown and his wife Elizabeth. She attended the school in Halstead run by her paternal aunts and later joined them as a teacher. While a teacher, she wrote three books aimed at young adult readers. In 1875, Brown married retired farmer Thomas Oslar as his second wife and became step-mother to his four children. The couple would go on to have a son and a daughter. In 1881, the family emigrated to South Africa where their ship, the S.S. Teuton, was wrecked 30 August 1881 off the coast after leaving Capetown. Brown along with her husband and four children drowned. Note: attribution very probable but not certain.
