Author: Samuel Mossman (1818–1890)
Biography: Samuel Mossman was born about 1818 in Edinburgh, the son of Isabella Mossman and an unknown father. His brother was the artist David Mossman. Mossman's early life cannot be traced, but he called himself a "naturalist" on the 1851 census. Soon after he travelled east to Australia and China. In the latter place, he worked as the editor of the North China Herald. On his return to Europe, he wrote several books on Australia, China, and Japan including the novel The Mandarin's Daughter (1876). He never married and died on 21 February 1890 in Liverpool.
