Biography: Charles E. Hallas was born in 1845 in Durham, the son of schoolmaster Jospeh Hallas. At a young age he went to work as a clerk before becoming a book keeper and accountant. He attempted a literary career with the novel Stephen Stephens (1867) which was well-received but never followed up. Hallas married but judging by the censuses the couple lived separately. In 1883, he was tried and convicted of fraud due to some criminal accounting. He served 18 months of hard labor. He died alone on 30 August 1891 in Lambeth.
