Biography: Mary Louisa Searle was born in 1846 in Birmingham, the daughter of prosperous Norfolk farmer Mitchell Baker. Under her initials and the pseudonym "Mary St. Clair" she began writing fiction as a young woman. In 1875, she married minister Walter Samuel Searle and the couple had three sons. After a time in Plymouth, the family moved to South Africa in the 1890s as missionaries in the Cape Province. She died of cancer on 19 January 1925 in Lutubeni Mganduli.
