Biography: Eliza Smith was born about 1822 in Worcestershire. Her early life cannot be traced. She recounts her conversion to Roman Catholicism and her return to Protestantism in two memoirs, Five Years a Catholic (1850) and The Progress of Beguilement to Romanism (1850). In addition, she wrote three novels also influenced by her religious journey. In middle age, she married clerk Joseph Richardson in 1863 and the couple resided in Islington. She was living in 1871 and died before the 1881 census.
