Biography: Anna Maria Ellen Wilson was born on 18 April 1844 in Bombay [Mumbai], India, the daughter of army officer George Wilson and his wife Anna Maria. She grew up in Suffolk where she wrote the collection of stories Tales of the Fern-Owl (1868) dedicated to her aunt Ellen Wilson (wife of her paternal uncle General Sir Archdale Wilson). The 1871 census finds her working as a governess for the Hughes family in Market Harborough. In 1873, she married farmer George Millard and the couple had nine children. She lived the remainder of her life in Hethel, Norfolk and she died there on 14 December 1914.
