Biography: Alexander Hay Japp was born on 20 December 1837 in Montrose. He attended the University of Edinburgh before moving to London to become a journalist. In particular, he joined the staff of Good Words and the Sunday Magazine, eventually editing both for a time. In addition to his literary work, he wrote the single novel Lights on the Way (1878) under the double pseudonyms of "J. H. Alexander" and "H. A. Page." Under the latter penname, Japp wrote several nonfiction books. He married twice and had four children. He died on 29 September 1905 in Coulsdon, Surrey.
