Biography: William Theodore Hickman was born in 1830 in Newington Green, the eldest son of William Hickman. He joined the army, serving with the 50th Queen's Own Regiment and rising to the rank of captain. In 1858, he married De Courcy Annie Dashwood and the couple had six daughters. During his retirement, Hickman turned to fiction, writing four novels over the course of twenty years. The latter half of his life was spent on an estate near Hastings. He died there on 30 December 1916.
