Author: Thomas Bardel Brindley (1818–1876)
Biography: Thomas Bardel Brindley was born on 13 February 1818 in Stourbridge, the son of Thomas Brindley and his wife Ann. His early life cannot be traced but by the 1840s he worked in the newspaper industry as an editor and later an owner of the Wolverhampton Herald. He would go on to edit and own several more newspapers. In addition, he published two collections of poems (both 1843), some nonfiction, and two novels. Brindley's personal life was irregular. In 1839, he married Ann Wilcox and the couple had ten children, the first of whom was born a month or so after the wedding. After ten years of married life, he began a relationship with their housemaid Elizabeth Patchett. After she became pregnant, husband and wife separated and Brindley continued living with Patchett as his wife (though he was never divorced) and they would have four children together. Late in life, the family moved to Oxford where he died on 5 September 1876. In his will, he left his estate to his second family.
