Author: George Percy Raines (1874–1962)

Alternate Name(s): George Percy Groves (alternate name)

Biography: George Percy Raines was born on 8 May 1874 in Windsor, the son of army officer and author John Percy Groves and his wife Harriet Augusta Raines. He briefly served in the Royal Guernsey Artillery led by his father but it seems he eschewed the military as a career. In 1892, he adopted his maternal uncle's name "Raines" in order to assure an inheritance when he died. Raines, again following his father's lead, wrote the single novel Terrible Times (1898) which featured the Indian Mutiny. However he moved on to become an actor, playwright, and theater manager. In the 1939 register he was retired living in Sunbury-on-Thames. He eventually moved back to Guernsey where he died on 7 December 1962. He was married, but his wife or any children he had cannot be traced.
