Biography: Martha Charlotte France was born around 1832 in Yarm, the daughter of photographer Thomas William Appleton. In 1865, she married commercial traveller James Ashburner France and the couple had two sons. As a married woman, France wrote fiction aimed at young adult readers. Late in life she moved to Tynemouth where she died on 11 January 1913.
