Biography: Mary Elizabeth Chevallier Boutell was born in 1842 in Sandridge, the daughter of Charles Boutell. She trained as a teacher and with her sister ran a school in Ipswich. In addition to her duties, Boutell wrote educational works and fiction—the latter under the pseudonym "Alice Hepburn." She never married and died on 26 October 1921 in Woodbridge.
