Author: Sophia Grace Toplis (1858–1945)
Biography: Sophia Grace Toplis was born on 12 December 1858 in Notting Hill, the daughter of John Toplis and his wife Sophia Craghill. At the age of ten, both of her parents died within a fortnight and left her and her brother orphans. They were raised by their uncle who sent Toplis to a girls' school and she later graduated from University College London. Subsequently, Toplis became a teacher and headmistress. In addition to her duties, she wrote a school novel The Girls of Cliff School (1894) and edited a collection of fiction by Richard Jefferies (1896). She never married and died on 26 may 1945 in London.
