Biography: John Henry Jewell was a well-known sporting journalist. He was born on 27 August 1851 in Barnsbury Islington, the son of government clerk John Henry Jewell. From a young age he worked in the press serving on the staffs of the Standard, Hour, Glasgow Evening News, Globe, and finally Daily Telegraph. Jewell edited his own short-lived sporting paper Luck in 1888. Obituaries note his wide circle of friends and his position as the secretary of the Amateur Athletic Club. His one foray into fiction was the Christmas book Nellie's Trials and Triumphs (1879) written during his time in Glasgow. He died of heart failure on 8 November 1900 in Clapham. He left a wife and son.
