Biography: Eliza Kerr was born around September 1858 in Lowthestown, Co. Fermanagh, the daughter of Methodist minister Robert Kerr. As a teenager, she wrote her first novel The Golden City (1876) and she would steadily continue writing into the twentieth century. In 1883, she married civil servant William Coates and the couple moved to London where he worked in the War Office. The couple were childless. Late in life, they retired to Hastings where she died on 11 July 1932.
