Author: James Smith (1824–1887)

Biography: James Smith was born on 2 March 1824 in Edinburgh. He was apprenticed to a printer which he continued to do until 1869. Thereafter he was appointed librarian to the Edinburgh Mechanics' Library. He was a noted poet and also went on write several works of fiction. He died 12 December 1887 in Edinburgh leaving a widow (his second wife) and grown children.
