Biography: Sir Hubert Edward Henry Jerningham was born on 19 October 1842 in Boulogne, France, the son of Sir Charles William Edward Jerningham and his wife Emma Roberts. He came from an old Roman Catholic family connected to the 8th Baron Stafford. He was educated in France, graduating from the University of France, and as a young man wrote several work in French. Later, he wrote a single novel Diane de Breteuille (1887) as well as some travel books. He spent fifteen years in the diplomatic service stationed in various cities in Europe. When he retired, he successfully stood for Parliament for Berwick and served for six years. He then served fourteen years in the colonial service in Honduras, Mauritius, and Trinidad and Tobago. A man of immense wealth, he owned Longridge Towers, a mansion in Northumbria. He married but did not have children. He died on 3 April 1914 at his home in London.
