Biography: Alice Charlotte Sampson was born around 1845 in Fort George, Scotland, the daughter of Col. John Sampson of the First Royal Regiment and his wife Katherine (née Irving). Her early life cannot be traced. Her father died in Sussex in 1866 and she and her mother were living in Brighton in the 1871 census. Shortly afterwards, Sampson wrote a handful of novels beginning with Scarborough Belle (1872). In 1883, she married widowed surgeon David Williams Morris and the couple had a son. The marriage was not a happy one: she twice instigated divorce proceeding (1889, 1892) and Morris was convicted of assaulting his wife in 1891. Her subsequent life cannot be traced.
