Author: Henry Tinson (1826–1891)
Biography: Henry Tinson was born on 1 November 1826 in Chelsea, the son of butcher Henry Tinson and his wife Ann (née Mould). He trained as an accountant and worked for the Great Western Railway where he later edited their Great Western Magazine. During this period, he wrote two anonymous novels, Baffled (1858) and Ebb and Flow (1859) which he later admitted he was not his best work. He later became the secretary of a loan company before spending a few years in Cimarron, New Mexico as secretary to a land and railway company. Thoughout this time he was an active contributor to magazines, including Cassell's Magazine and Chambers's Journal. On his return to England, he devoted himself to writing, primarily contributing short fiction and serials to magazines and newspapers. In addition, he wrote for the stage. In 1848, he married Charlotte Hannah Emerton and the couple had four children. He suffered paralysis in his later years and he successfully applied to the Royal Literary Fund. He died on 5 May 1891 in Finsbury.
