Biography: Jane Anna Elizabeth Lefroy was born on 15 April 1793 in Tavistock, the daughter of James Austen and his first wife Anne Mathew (who died two years later). Through her father, she was the niece of novelist Jane Austen and the two formed a close bond as witnessed by their surviving correspondence. In 1814, she married Benjamin Lefroy and the couple had seven children, including author Fanny Caroline Lefroy. Lefroy was widowed in 1829 and lived with her daughter in Reading. As a writer, she wrote an unpublished novel in her youth, contributed to the life history of her aunt, and published an anonymous novel The Winter's Tale (1841). She died on 1 September 1872 in Reading.
